Frequently Asked Questions

How many areas can I test?

Each biotape sample is used for one location only. If you want to test multiple areas, you’ll need additional samples

What is the difference between a surface swab and an air plate?

A surface swab is best for testing a specific visible area or suspicious surfaces.

An air plate is used to capture what naturally settles from the air in a room over time.

In short:

  • Swab = a specific surface
  • Air plate = a general room air sample

What can this test tell me?

It identifies the type of mould on a specific surface and confirms whether mould is present in that exact location.

Can this test detect mould in the air?

Biotape testing is designed for surface sampling, but it can capture settled airborne spores (dust) on surfaces.

However, it does not measure active airborne mould levels. For that, a dedicated air test is recommended.

Is mould testing always necessary?

Yes, if you suspect mould and there are no obvious signs of visible mould, or only small signs of visible mould. In those cases, testing can help give you clearer information about what may be present and whether further action is worth taking.

This test is also still suitable if you can already see mould. It can help confirm what was detected in the sampled area, provide more context around the result, and help you decide on sensible next steps.

What can this test tell me?

Our testing helps confirm whether mould is present in the sampled area, identify the moulds included in the test panel, and explain what the result may mean in practical terms.

The goal is not to overwhelm you with technical detail. It is to give you clear answers and sensible next steps.

Your report will be broken down to tell you:

  • what was detected
  • where it was detected
  • what that result may suggest
  • what sensible next steps to consider

Will this tell me if mould is dangerous?

We explain the moulds detected in your sample, their general relevance in indoor environments, and the potential health concerns commonly associated with them.

Please note: This is an environmental test, not a medical diagnosis or body analysis. The impact of mould can vary depending on the type of mould, the level of exposure, and the person involved.

Health effects from mould exposure vary based on factors like:

  • the type and amount of mould present
  • the level of moisture damage
  • how long someone is exposed
  • the person’s health, allergies, asthma status, or immune status

Damp and mouldy indoor environments can be associated with symptoms like nasal irritation, coughing, wheezing, skin irritation and rashes, worsening asthma, and other respiratory issues, especially in sensitive individuals.

How reliable are the results?

The results are highly reliable when the sample is collected correctly.

That said, every mould test has its limits. A biotape sample reflects only the specific surface and location tested, including any mould or settled spores present in that area. It does not represent the condition of your entire home or indoor air.

This is why choosing the right sampling location matters, and why multiple samples or further testing may be needed for a complete assessment.

Do I still need a professional inspection?

Sometimes, yes.

If you are dealing with:

  • strong musty odours
  • recurring mould
  • large affected areas
  • known leaks or water damage
  • suspected hidden mould behind walls or ceilings

Then, a professional inspection is still recommended.

Our test helps you get clearer information and decide with clarity whether that next step may be necessary.

How long does it take to get results?

Once your sample arrives at our lab, results are typically returned within 3–5 business days.
